Reykjavík is a city of striking contrasts. Located just below the Arctic Circle, Iceland’s capital region is compact, fast-growing, and shaped by a northern climate that creates distinctive accessibility challenges. Long winters, snow and ice, limited daylight for part of the year, and near-continuous summer light all influence how people move through the city. For visitors and residents with visual, mobility, sensory, or cognitive access needs, these conditions make design consistency especially important. The first impression is positive. Reykjavík feels safe, welcoming, and human-scaled. Its central areas are walkable, and many neighbourhoods are connected by paths that support walking, cycling, scooters, and other small mobility options. The city has also adopted accessibility and walkability policies reflected in the Reykjavík City's Accessibility Policy 2022-2030 that point toward a stronger commitment to inclusive public space. That policy direction is visible on the ground in pedestrian zones, crossings, ramps, tactile indicators, audible signals, and a growing active transportation network. Other public institutions and private business appear to be aligning with the policy. At the same time, the experience is uneven. Some accessibility features are well-designed but not consistently applied. Tactile walking surfaces and truncated domes appear at some crossings, yet gaps between accessible nodes can make navigation less predictable. Audible crossing signals are present in places, but not everywhere a person might expect them. In a city where winter conditions can wear down surfaces and obscure cues, maintaining these features is as important as installing them. Wayfinding is where the contrast is most apparent. When signage was available, it was generally clear, readable, appropriately sized, and supported by good contrast. However, signs and maps were limited and fragmented. As a visitor, I often had to rely on Google Maps rather than a coordinated system of street-level information. Area maps existed in some locations, but they did not always connect comfortably from one decision point to the next. This matters because wayfinding is not only about signs. For a visually accessible city, wayfinding includes consistent placement, clear street names, tactile and audible cues, legible maps, lighting, landmarks, and predictable crossings. A person should be able to move through public space with confidence, not by piecing together disconnected clues. Reykjavík has many of the right ingredients, but the system would benefit from stronger continuity. Micromobility also shapes the accessibility experience. Hopp scooters, taxis, and car-share options are integrated through a single app, making car-light travel easier for many people. Scooters are common and convenient, but they also need careful management. Parking, sidewalk clutter, speed, and interactions with pedestrians can affect access for people with low vision, mobility disabilities, or sensory sensitivities. What stands out most is Reykjavík’s potential. The city already feels safe, neighbourly, and inviting. I saw children moving independently, people using paths throughout the city, and public spaces that encouraged walking and lingering. With a more standardized wayfinding system, stronger maintenance of tactile and audible features, and corridor-based implementation of accessibility upgrades. For other cold-climate cities, Reykjavík can offer a strong reference point for northern cities designing inclusive public realms. What would make your city easier to navigate in every season?
